Practical guide to keeping your cotton garments spotless

Cotton is one of the most used materials in our collections due to its softness, breathability, and comfort. It's also a very versatile natural fiber that adapts well to different climates and clothing types. However, to ensure your favorite cotton garment lasts for many seasons, proper care is essential. Therefore, in this post, we share the keys to keeping it looking impeccable season after season.

1. Look at the washing label of your cotton garment

The first thing you should do before washing your garment is read the care label and washing instructions. This will tell you whether the garment should be machine or hand washed, what temperature to use, and some other tips, which we'll cover below. On our garments, you'll find this label on the inside right seam. Each type of cotton garment may have specific needs. Following these instructions is essential to prolong the life of your garments.

2. Wash them with cold or warm water

Cotton can shrink at high temperatures, so it's recommended to wash it in cold or warm water (maximum 30°C). If hand washing, avoid wringing the garment to prevent deformation.

If you use a washing machine, select a gentle cycle and avoid overloading it. Too much friction between garments can wear down the cotton fibers and cause them to lose their softness.

3. Use mild detergent

Harsh detergents can weaken cotton fibers. Choose a mild detergent, preferably for delicate fabrics, and avoid excessive use of fabric softeners, as they can leave residue and reduce the fabric's breathability.

If you want a more natural alternative, you can use white vinegar as a fabric softener. Not only does it help remove detergent residue, but it also keeps the cotton soft and eliminates unpleasant odors.

4. Separate the colors when washing

To avoid staining and fading, always wash white garments separately from dark or bright colors. This way, they'll retain their original color for longer. It's also advisable to turn garments inside out before washing to reduce wear on the outside of the fabric. This is especially useful for garments with prints or embroidery.

5. Air dry whenever possible

Excessive heat from a dryer can shrink and wear cotton garments. It's best to air dry them in a shady area to avoid direct sunlight, which can fade them.

If you must use the dryer, select a low or medium heat cycle and remove the garment before it's completely dry. This will reduce the risk of shrinkage.

6. Iron at medium temperature

If you need to iron your cotton garments, do so with the iron at medium temperature and, if possible, with the garment slightly damp to make the process easier. You can also use a cloth between the iron and the fabric to prevent shine or damage.

For thicker cotton garments, such as pants or bedding, you can use steam to remove wrinkles without damaging the fibers.

7. Remove stains correctly

If your cotton garment gets a stain, it's important to treat it immediately. Use cold water and a mild stain remover before washing normally. Avoid rubbing too hard, as this can weaken the fibers. For grease stains, apply a little talcum powder or cornstarch to the stain and let it absorb the excess before washing. For wine or coffee stains, use water and baking soda.

8. Store properly

Fold cotton garments instead of hanging them, especially T-shirts or sweaters, as they can become misshapen over time. Store them in a cool, dry place to prevent mold and unpleasant odors.

For better organization, use storage boxes or dividers in your closet. You can also add lavender sachets or activated charcoal to keep clothes fresh and moisture-free.

Here's a video from well-known organization expert Mari Kondo with an infallible method.

In conclusion, properly caring for your cotton garment is key to ensuring it lasts longer and stays in good condition. By washing it properly, drying it thoroughly, ironing it carefully, and storing it in a cool, dry place, you'll be able to enjoy your favorite garment for much longer.

By following these tips, you'll not only extend the life of your clothing, but you'll also help reduce the environmental impact by reducing the need to replace it frequently.
